Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth to Be Honored by GLAAD

Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth to Be Honored by GLAAD

GLAAD, a.k.a. the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has announced that two of its most prestigious Media Awards will be given this year to performers Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth. The "La Vida Loca" singer was chosen for his bravery in coming out last year, while Broadway and Glee star Chenoweth is being honored for defending gay equality online.

"When allies like Kristin take such powerful stands against anti-gay sentiments in the media, it sends an important message of equality," the organization said of the actress.

Fans may remember the scathing letter that Chenoweth posted on Newsweek.com after the magazine criticized her friends Sean Hayes and Jonathan Groff for being unconvincing in straight roles. Chenoweth is also a vocal supporter of the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community on Twitter.

As for Martin, who outed himself on his website last March, the GLAAD rep says that his honesty was "a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long did not have many out gay people to look up to."

The 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards honor the best portrayals of the GLBT community in the media, as well as individuals who have made a difference. Last year's recipients included Cynthia Nixon, Drew Barrymore, Wanda Sykes and Joy Behar.

And while we're on the topic of Ricky Martin's awards, he's neck-and-neck with How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris in the Gay Man We Wish Could Be Our Boyfriend category of the iVillage Entertainment Awards. Don't forget to vote!
