Justin Bieber's 'U Smile' Video: A Cheat Sheet

Here's everything you need to know before tonight's premiere of the singer's latest clip.

It's only a matter of hours before Justin Bieber bestows his latest video gift upon the world in the form of the clip for "U Smile." The video is the fifth off his March release, My World 2.0. It follows videos for his singles "Baby," in which he went bowling with Drake and Ludacris, "Never Let You Go," in which he hung out at Atlantis, "Somebody To Love," in which he threw a karate-themed dance party with Usher and finally "Eenie Meenie," in which he and Sean Kingston partied in the Hollywood Hills.

While details are scant about what will go down in the Alfredo Flores-directed video, which premieres on Thursday evening (September 30), Bieber has tweeted that it will focus on wooing a young woman who will apparently be an actress playing a fan that he falls in love with. It seems the idea was inspired by people wondering if he would ever date a fan.

"I took the opportunity 2 make a video 4 the fans, about a fan, and how we could fall IN LOVE," he tweeted about the forthcoming video. "Love Grows. #LoveGrows."

As for what Bieber and his lady pal might be doing in the video, photos taken from the shoot show him and his female lead outside a closed, run-down movie theater trying to break in.

Bieber spoke to MTV News in March about working on the track alongside songwriters Jerry Duplessis, Arden Altino and Dan August Rigo. "I worked with August. I got him. He's a really good writer," the singer said. "The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It's really amazing."

At the time he further explained via Twitter, "It really is a throwback to the great records I listened to growing up. ... I wrote it for all my fans who got me here."

Are you looking forward to the "U Smile" video? Let us know in the comments!

Usher's VMA Performance To Be Worthy Of A 'King'

Awards-show executive producer teases Ush's 'best televised dance routine' in years.
By James Montgomery

LOS ANGELES — The success of Usher's "OMG" is as much a testament to his unyielding popularity as an artist as it is his ability to, well, dance his ass off. That's particularly apparent in the Video Music Award-nominated video for the song, which features Ush and a bevy of beauties popping, locking, pivoting and posing in ways we never thought possible. Quite simply, the man can move.

So when it came time to plot out his VMA performance, well, Usher's team -- and the brain trust behind the show -- didn't have a whole lot of trouble coming up with a concept. The dancing was going to be front and center. The only question was: How could they take things to the next level.

"We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher," VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. "We said to him, 'We want to do the best televised dance routine that you've done in years. Let's show why you're the king.' "

And Ush's Sunday night performance is very much an affair worthy of royalty. Full of eye-popping moves, hip-dipping dancers and more special effects than a Hollywood blockbuster, it makes full use of not just the epic VMA stage (which practically engulfs the entirety of Nokia Theater), but the space behind it.

While we can't give away too many details, based on the rehearsals we saw Thursday, the off-the-wall choreography is only part of the attraction. There are lasers and LED lights, stunts, slides and even some props. Like we said, it's kind of like a Hollywood blockbuster. And kind of a coronation too. After all, Usher is the king.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Ke$ha Breaks Through To The Big Time: A VMA Cheat Sheet!

'Tik Tok' singer/nominee racked up massive digital downloads, opened for Rihanna and survived 'SNL' on road to Video Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

Ke$ha
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images

Ke$ha is, without question, one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whirling, hard-partying pop oddity (who may also be a genius) with a #1 album and a boatload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a few enemies. She even has under her star-spangled belt, her very own, very public WTF debacle in the form of a rather, uh, divisive "Saturday Night Live" performance.

Ever since Ke$ha came stumbling into our lives last year with "Tik Tok" (we named it one of the Best Songs of 2009, by the way), she's been nothing if not consistently entertaining, if slightly confounding. She's always coming back with another massive single or eye-popping video, always saying — or wearing — something outrageous. In the process, she's made a rather indelible impact on popular culture and, earlier this month, MTV showed its recognition of that fact, rewarding her with multiple Video Music Award nominations, including nods for Best Female Video and Best New Artist.

But how did she go from unknown pop curio to one of the fastest-rising starlets on the planet? Here's a look back:

In January 2010, "Tik Tok" rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record for digital downloads in the process. That same month, she was named one of three female Artists to Watch , as part of MTV News' Pop Week 2010. Buoyed by the success of "Tik Tok," Ke$ha's debut album, Animal, opened at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, selling more than 152,000 copies and ending "Britain's Got Talent" phenom Susan Boyle's six-week run at #1. Ke$h would pay homage to Boyle soon after, declaring to MTV News that the cat-loving singer "knows how to party."

She followed up "Tik Tok" with "Blah Blah Blah," another party-ready anthem featuring her pals in 3OH!3. The song cracked the Top 10 and has sold more than 2 million digital downloads to date.

Ke$ha then took to Twitter, where she flirted with John Mayer and then drew the ire of both Britney Spears and Justin Bieber fans, after she (sorta) swiped at Britney in a demo of an old tune ("Styrofoam") and called Biebus "a tiny little baby." In both instances, she apologized ... though, not before Perez Hilton weighed in, calling her a "trash-talking train wreck."

In April, she was announced as the opening act on Rihanna's Last Girl On Earth Tour, and then got to work on another video, this one for "Your Love Is My Drug." That month, clad in a bizarre bodysuit (and later, nothing but glow-in-the-dark bodypaint), she performed a pair of songs on "SNL," a debacle which was described by some as "the worst ['SNL' performance] ever." Never one to back away from a good brawl, Ke$ha responded thusly: "F--- the cynics."

In May came the premiere of the "Drug" video — a bonanza of beards, boulders, Beatles and bodypaint — and the pop singer quickly followed that up with a cameo on 3OH!3's "My First Kiss" and yet another Animal video, this one for "Take It Off."

Later that summer, she hit the road with Rihanna, and described the dynamic duo's backstage relationship thusly: "We braid each other's hair ... naked." She then began discussing plans for a follow-up to Animal, saying she could foresee getting into country music but would definitely stay away from jazz. She also began laying the groundwork for her very own headlining tour. Oh, and of course, she revealed she's planning a fashion line, too, featuring capes and haberdashery made out of "roadkill ... and recycled feathers."

Seems strangely fitting, if you ask us.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the Best New Artist video through September 12.

Beyonce Could Release New Single In Next Few Weeks

'Listening to New B record Dream wrote ... Y'all C in 3 weeks!' producer Los Da Mystro tweeted Wednesday.
By Jocelyn Vena

Fans are slowly but surely getting more and more details about Beyoncé's next album. And the latest word is that the singer could release her first single from the album within the next three weeks. While the name of the song is still unknown, it appears that Lady B is well on her way to releasing new music off her follow-up disc to 2008's I Am ... Sasha Fierce.

"Listening to New B record Dream wrote ... F---INg INSANE! WOw!! She About to Kill the game again! Had to Listen again!! Y'all C in 3 weeks!" producer Los Da Mystro, a frequent collaborator of The-Dream, who worked with Tricky Stewart on Beyoncé's hit "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," tweeted. "Thats what they sayn now.. But it is the music Business. could b sooner r lata."

MTV News hadn't received comment by Beyoncé's label by press time.

However, the producers and songwriters she's been working with on the album have been dropping hints about what fans might expect on Beyoncé's fourth studio album. So far Ne-Yo, Jim Jonsin and Sean Garrett have all opened up about penning tracks for the album. And with the tweet from Los Da Mystro, it's evident that she's once again working with The-Dream and Stewart.

B's last album spawned the hits "Single Ladies," "If I Were a Boy," her Gaga-collabo "Video Phone" and "Halo." And while it is unknown what direction this next album will take, Ne-Yo has pointed out that Beyoncé has an "agenda" all her own.

"She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do," he told MTV News. "She's going to give you directions [like], 'Here's where I'm going, so here's where I need you to be.' And, you know, I'm a person that follows direction well. [And she'll be like], 'So this is the sound, this is the vibe; make it happen.' And I write and she likes it or she doesn't. And in this case she did, and there you have it."

Since she killed off her alter-ego Sasha Fierce for her next album, this record will be all Beyoncé. Producer Jim Jonsin recently noted that while he wants to go even more '80s than the pair did on "Sweet Dreams," he's also looking to try out some other genres with the singer. "Even some sexy mid-tempos, see if she likes that and I'll try that too," Jonsin said.

Whatever the album ends up sounding like, Garrett promised that it won't be a rehash of previous material. He explained, "We're working on some really incredible music. We're going to stretch a little bit — take it to a whole new level, if Beyoncé can go to a whole new level. ... It's going to be her biggest album ever. We're going to take it to a whole other level."

The full list of nominees for the 2010 American Music Awards were announced Tuesday (October 12) in Los Angeles, and, much like he's done for most of the year, Eminem stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Em is up for five awards at the 2010 AMAs, tied with country juggernauts Lady Antebellum for the most of any artist. Justin Bieber scored four nods, while B.o.B, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Usher are each up for three. Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna and Drake are also nominated in various categories.

Eminem is nominated in both the Favorite Male Artist - Pop or Rock (up against Bieber and Usher) and Hip-Hop categories and Artist of the Year (where he'll face off against Gaga, Perry, Bieber and Ke$ha). His massively successful Recovery disc is also up for Favorite Album - Rap or Hip-Hop. Bieber's four nods are for Favorite Male - Pop or Rock, Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year. My World 2.0 is also in the running for Album of the Year - Pop or Rock.

AMA nominees are selected from BigChampagne's Ultimate Chart, which ranks the most popular artists and songs based on a weighted combination of music sales, radio and TV broadcast, Internet streaming and video viewing and "additional online metrics," including social-media activity.

Winners will be determined by online voting, at AMAVote.com; voting is now under way in all categories.

The 38th annual AMAs will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in L.A. on Sunday, November 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Usher's VMA-Nominated 'OMG' Inspired By '80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers 'on a journey, not a ride.'
By Jayson Rodriguez

Usher in "OMG"

For a video as forward-thinking as Usher's "OMG" -- with its laser beams and light flashes -- director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.

"The original idea was kind of Max Headroom," Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from '80s British TV. "That's where it came from — the TV flickering on and there's this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date."

"Max Headroom was always in his room," he continued, "this unidentifiable room, '80s shapes. I used that for inspiration."

The formula worked: "OMG" is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake's "Find Your Love," Jason Derülo's "In My Head," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake's video.

"OMG" is the first time Usher and Mandler — who has worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.

Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.

"When I first shot the song to him, I was like, 'Are you sure you're gonna be able to catch this one?' And he said, 'I got it,' " Usher explained.

"We wanted to bring Will.I.Am (the song's producer) into my world," he continued. "Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible."

Mandler described the visuals as "Hitchcock-ian." Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher's talent take over.

"The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride," the director said. "And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what's gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We're so focused on him, we don't notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can't quite see far enough ahead to know what's gonna come next."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

'Jackass 3D' Stars Recall Their Favorite Stunts

Sewage dive and pudding diaper among the cast's picks.
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kara Warner

Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O
Photo: MTV News

The upcoming "Jackass 3D" movie caps off ten years of cringe-inducing, did-they-just-really-do-that? stunts that have both entertained and freaked out fans. When the cast looks back on some of their favorite moments, many feats of foolishness come to mind, including BMX jousting, fast-food football and "every time that [Johnny Knoxville] gets on a skateboard or into a bull ring," as Steve-O said.

However, there is one stunt in particular that still blows the guys' minds after all of these years: Ryan Dunn's jump into a pool of raw sewage. Although plunging into a vat of waste has some fairly obvious drawbacks, many of the castmembers agree that what made the experience truly unforgettable were the things that didn't make the screen.

"I love it when ... Ryan Dunn jumped into the sewage plant with just a snorkel and then he found out later there was just like, crazy rotating blades just underneath his feet," Dave England recalled. "I guess six feet down, if he had went a little farther it would have just sucked him in and ripped him to shreds and we wouldn't be having the 10-year anniversary right now."

Jeff Tremaine agreed that Dunn's dive was memorable not only for the craziness of the stunt but because it also gave the cast a look at the daredevil's equally nutty ink.

"I loved when you [referencing Bam Margera] made Ryan jump into the poo factory, the 'Poo Dive' I think we called it," Tremaine said. " 'Cause that was horrible, but the best part was ... revealing his tattoos that we didn't know about. That was the first time we ever met Ryan."

Margera explained that his high-school pal Dunn came up with the idea to plummet into gallons of raw sewage and when he showed up he immediately made an impression with his scrappy tats.

"He takes his pants off [and] he's has all these ... homemade tattoos," Margera remembered. "It's like a Red Hot Chili Pepper sign, a noose and then a Blair Witch [Project] thing. It's just total ridiculous nonsense."

"I think there's just a little ... piece of barbed wire," Tremaine added. "I think he was intending it to go all the way around his thigh but ... I guess, maybe it hurt too bad so he's just got a little half inch of barbed wire."

"It's just a whole bunch of terribleness," Margera added.

Other fondly-remembered moments include Jason "Wee Man" Acuña's romp as a skateboarding Oompa Loompa and England's turn as vagabond with a questionable diet.

"I liked it when Dave did the chocolate pudding in the diaper and then threw it in the trash in the park and then came and pulled it out and was like, 'I'm so hungry, I'm so hungry,' and this guy was like, 'Yo, homeboy that's a diaper,' " Preston Lacy laughed.

For those wondering how the prankster crew can top their decade of debauchery in "Jackass 3D," which hits theaters on Friday, Knoxville said one of his personal favorite stunts is in the forthcoming flick.

"Steve-O's Port-O-Potty bungee in this one is pretty epic," Knoxville teased.

'Napoleon Dynamite' Animated Series Headed To Fox

Network orders six episodes of show voiced by original stars Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and more.
By Eric Ditzian

The "Napoleon Dynamite" animated series
Photo: Fox/Rough Draft Studios

Gosh, look what Fox has planned now! An animated series based on "Napoleon Dynamite," the 2004 indie hit about, well, not much at all besides a small-town kid with a slew of idiosyncratic lingo.

Fox has ordered six episodes of the series, Variety reports, following the May announcement that the network was developing the show. Much of the original cast has returned to voice the characters, including Jon Heder as Napoleon, Efren Ramirez as Pedro, Aaron Ruell as Kip Dynamite and Jon Gries as Uncle Rico.

Jared Hess, who co-wrote and directed the movie, is an executive producer and writer of the animated series, along with his brother Jerusha (a writer on the original film). Longtime "Simpsons" exec producer Mike Scully is also onboard as a writer and producer.

There is no word about when the series will reach the airwaves, but it seems a safe bet to assume the show will become part of Fox's Sunday night block of animation. Currently, the network airs two hours of animation starting at 8 p.m.: "The Simpsons," "The Cleveland Show," "Family Guy" and "American Dad." We'll have to wait and see where and when "Napoleon Dynamite" is eventually slotted.

Variety also reports that Jonah Hill's animated comedy, "Allen Gregory," has been picked up for seven episodes. Co-written and executive-produced by Hill and "Yes Man" writers Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, the show follows a 7-year-old celebrity forced to attend elementary school with regular kids.

What other movies would you like to see become animated series? Share your ideas in the comments!

Lady Gaga's Former Manager Recalls Singer's Transformation

'She was painfully shy — very different from who she is now,' Bob Leone says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Long before there was Lady Gaga, there was Stefani Germanotta, the dark-haired up-and-coming singer/songwriter from New York. Her manager at the time, Bob Leone, knew that girl. And in a new interview, he explains that the brazen, in-your-face performer you see these days was once a shy, unassuming singer who had a hard time even getting onstage.

"She was painfully shy — very different from who she is now," Leone told People.com. "She came to the open mics with her mother twice before she built up the courage to go onstage. ... She was prodigy-like. She was clearly a very good songwriter and keyboard player."

The former director for the Songwriters Hall of Fame, who is auctioning off memorabilia from Gaga's early career, including six CDs of early recordings and a pair of demo discs from her first days as Lady Gaga, worked with Gaga for several years and managed her for six months in 2006.

Leone says that Gaga went through one very important transformation in 2006. "It was a very important six months because going into it, she was Stefani, and she was still writing pop music. By the end of that six-month period, she was officially Lady Gaga."

"She blew everyone away," Leone further recalled of an artist showcase in which Lady Gaga appeared that year. "Nobody talked about anything after that show but Lady Gaga. She bantered with the audience and was very funny. I never noticed that sense of humor when she was Stefani."

And it seems that even four years ago, Gaga knew exactly what she wanted. "Whenever someone asked her, 'what is your goal?' she would always give the same two-word answer: 'world domination,' " he remembered. "She's got it [now]!" he added.

Chris Brown's BET Performance Joins List Of Greatest Pop-Culture Crying Fits

Halle Berry, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake and more have had their moments.
By Kyle Anderson

Chris Brown performs at the 2010 BET awards on Sunday
Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images

Despite the triumphant TV returns of Kanye West, T.I. and El DeBarge at Sunday night's 2010 BET Awards, the big headline from the show was Chris Brown's moving tribute to late superstar Michael Jackson. Brown flawlessly executed all of Jackson's most classic dance moves (including a scorching moonwalk), but when it came time to lend his voice to Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," Brown broke down in tears and could not sing, apparently overwhelmed by the emotion of the situation.

Crying in public is hardly a new phenomenon in the world of popular culture. Brown joins the list of some of the biggest stars in the world who have also broken down on television.

Halle Berry When Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 74th Annual Academy Awards in 2002 (for her work in "Monster's Ball"), she became the first African-American woman to take home the prize. That, combined with the overwhelming experience that was making the emotionally-charged "Monster's Ball" and the huge standing ovation she received, threw Berry into hysterics during her acceptance speech. "This moment is so much bigger than me," she said.

Kelly Clarkson When Kelly Clarkson won the very first season of "American Idol," she was initially in a state of shock. Unable to express how she was feeling to the television audience who voted her the victor over Justin Guarini, she moved on to her performance of "A Moment Like This." When she hit the lyric, "I can't believe it's happening to me," she finally broke. She managed to get through the song, but to continuously apologized for her emotion.

Justin Timberlake Ashton Kutcher's hit MTV show "Punked" certainly pushed a lot of his famous friends to the brink, but few had a reaction like Timberlake. When Kutcher's crew of actors pretended to be federal officers seizing most of his possessions for failure to pay back taxes, Timberlake flipped out and wept. Usually, Kutcher's reveal at the end of the episode throws the celebrity in question into laughing jags or fits of anger, but Timberlake was clearly just filled with relief.

Tonya Harding Athletes cry all the time, but it's usually because of the overwhelming thrill of victory or the agony of bitter defeat. Rarely do they weep during a particular competition, but that's exactly what Harding did at the 1994 Winter Olympics. After dealing with her connection to the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan in the run-up to the games, Harding took the ice only to realize that a lace on one of her skates had broken. In between sobs, she pleaded with the judges to allow her to get new laces and start over. They allowed it, though Harding still only finished eighth.

Crystal Bowersox The season nine "American Idol" runner-up had an extremely emotional run to the finals (including a harrowing health scare), but it took merely the presence of her father and a particularly heartfelt song to push her to tears. Bowersox slipped a handful of sobs into her performance of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions' "People Get Ready" during Inspirational Week on the show. It was one of the many performances that put Bowersox in the discussion of the best "Idol" contestants of all time.

Tracy Morgan The always unpredictable star of "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" has had a tough life and a challenging career, but the mere mention of co-star Tina Fey sent Morgan on the crying train when he visited with Oprah Winfrey on an episode of her show back in April. "She's my friend. Tina is my friend. I love her," he told Winfrey as he was fighting back tears.

"Crying Girl" There are an awful lot of "American Idol" moments on this list, aren't there? Ashley Ferl gained notoriety during the show's sixth season not as a contestant but as a particularly emotional audience member. The 13-year-old Ferl was so taken with "Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar's take on the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" that she sobbed uncontrollably, earning herself a great deal of screen time and the privilege of becoming an Internet meme for a while.

Did we miss any? What is the best incident of celebrity crying? And what did you think of Brown's performance? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga's 'Sopranos' Cameo Surfaces

Gaga appeared on season three of the hit HBO show in an episode called 'The Telltale Moozadell.'
By Eric Ditzian

The sunken treasure that is Lady Gaga's pop-culture past continues to reap Internet gold. In January, we hauled out a clip from the pop star's nearly forgotten appearance on "The Hills," when she popped up in a vinyl bodysuit and required some zipper assistance from Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.

Now, further proving the point that the Internet never forgets, Gaga's 2001 appearance on "The Sopranos" has shown up online. The episode, called "The Telltale Moozadell," is from the third season of the hit HBO show.

Mob boss Tony Soprano's son, A.J., is acting out while at the school pool with friends. Wearing a black top and jeans, Gaga is one of three girls hanging out, smoking cigarettes and watching the boys swim. One of A.J.'s friends then gets the idea to chuck a desk into the water. From there it's a free-for-all, as Gaga and her pals toss equipment and sports trophies into the pool. A.J. ends up getting probation. Gaga, alas, is never heard from again. The episode aired when the future superstar was just 15 years old.

Her gig as an extra on "The Sopranos," though, was not the only time Gaga ended up on TV before she took on her famous moniker. As previously revealed, she once appeared on an episode of MTV's "Boiling Points," a hidden-camera show in which unwitting contestants had to keep their cool as various undercover actors tried to annoy them. Gaga didn't do so well, unleashing a bleep-worthy word after a waitress brought her a soiled salad.

"Who puts that in their mouth? Would you put that in your mouth?" she said. "It has sh-- all over it!"

'Jackass 3D' Stars Recall Their Favorite Stunts

Sewage dive and pudding diaper among the cast's picks.

Justin Bieber's 'CSI' Cameo Shows Off Dark Side

Fans will have to wait until February for Bieber's story line to continue.
By Jocelyn Vena

The appropriately titled season premiere of "CSI," "Shock Waves," found the CSIs chasing down a bomb suspect with a grudge against the cops. With the investigators each dealing with ongoing physical and emotional damage from various other traumatic events, they had to put those feelings aside to chase down the McCann brothers, two young men with some authority issues.

After Dr. Raymond Langston (Laurence Fishburne) is stabbed by inmate Nate Haskell, it's assumed Haskell is the man behind the bombing at a funeral for a dead officer attended by Nick Stokes (George Eads). When they realize that the killer's MO doesn't match that of Haskell's, they are on the trail, looking into every lead, which includes two very key clues that bring us to Jason McCann, played by Justin Bieber in his acting debut.

We first meet Bieber at a community center, where he is defending the man who helped raise him, Ralph. "Ralph was no criminal," Bieber says. "He's a decent man. He took my brother and I when we had no one."

But it's not long before Bieber and the CSIs meet at the community center, where they are trying to track down a cell phone used to detonate one of the bombs. In Bieber's several scenes, his biggest and most convincing acting comes during his interrogation by Stokes.

After learning that a young man fitting McCann's description bought a toy plane, also used in the explosion, he sits down with the teen to try to find his brother, Alex, the main suspect in the explosion. Bieber is certainly new to acting, but he shows some quick wit and certainly has a screen presence, not to mention that signature hair, while delivering his lines alongside the veteran "CSI" actor.

"Where's your gun, your vest, your badge? You're off work or something?" Bieber quips. "You still represent the authority, everything I hate. It's probably like you hate me."

Soon, however, McCann's confused-kid nature starts to show as he opens up to Stokes about his brother's vindictive nature against the police. "They're going to kill him, aren't they?" he asks about his brother, who most likely is the guy out to settle scores by blowing up cops. "I didn't have anything to do with the bombs. I just bought the airplane."

Soon, we learn that Ralph, the man who cared for the boys, was arrested, though it is never said why or if he actually deserved it. "When the cops arrested Ralph, Alex snapped. Ralph was like a father. He was a decent man," he said, adding his brother's motives: "He told me he was going to scare the cops. He's got a house in old Henderson. You'd better hurry. That show at the funeral was just fireworks compared to what's coming."

Stokes is soon off to find Alex, though it really isn't too hard to find him. Alex is caught buying supplies to make more bombs and is killed by the cops when he pulls his gun, leaving Jason without his older brother but the CSIs with lots of evidence in the back seat of Alex's car.

The evidence? He wanted to blow up police headquarters. Jason's story is kind of left up in the air, but not without one more explosion at an abandoned building being investigated. The catch: Alex was already dead when the explosion was set off. And, with Bieber in custody and an evil look in his eyes, it seems he's keeping the family business alive.

So what will happen when Bieber's McCann returns? Well, fans will have to wait until February to find out.

What did you think of Bieber's acting debut? Let us know in the comments!

The Situation Defends Snooki Pimp-Slap

To be fair, THG's headline is a bit misleading here.

The Situation did not rear back and full on smack his fellow cast member Snooki on Jersey Shore. He did, however, refer to himself as the pimp of all pimps. Then, in an agitated state, he administered what he calls a "love tap" to our favorite guidette.

Not cool.

Snooki and The Situation Photo

The Situation-Snooki drama took place near the end of the episode.

When Sitch tried to round up the roomies after a night at the club, Snooki didn't wanna go. To get her attention, the self-proclaimed leader kinda gently slapped her.

"Don't f*%king slap me in the face and tell me that I need to go home," she responded, clearly not pleased. But he says he was just trying to avoid a bad Situation.

"Snooki sometimes drinks a little too much," he explained to MTV News. "She becomes less aware of her surroundings and unaware of what's going on."

Mike Sorrentino says it was not hubris, but rather the Season 1 incident in which Snooki got drilled in the face by that goon Brad Ferro that sprung him into action.

"I really wanted to try and keep an eye on her," sayeth Sitch. "Not necessarily slap some sense into her, but let her know, 'Hey, you can't be here by yourself. You're a little girl, and the whole group was leaving.' It was a little love tap."

While The Situation maintained he had the best of intentions, he does acknowledge that he might have "went about it the wrong way or went about it too seriously."

Still, "It's not like I punched somebody. It's not like I did a full smack, a hard smack. It was a little tap to her cheek. Like, 'Wake up, you're going to get hurt.'"

"And if you care for somebody, that is definitely acceptable, because you're looking out for somebody." Hmm, you see, that's a nice spin to put on it, but ...

Previous footage showed a brooding Situation upset over the fact that he had no chicks and clearly in a foul mood. One he may have taken out on Snook.

In any case, hopefully the BFFs patch it up before the next trip to Klutch.

Michael Jackson Doctors Won't Be Charged In Singer's Death

California state investigators will not file charges against seven other doctors who treated the late star.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Seven doctors who treated the late Michael Jackson will not be charged in the singer's death. According to The Associated Press California officials said Wednesday (July 28) that they will not file charges against the doctors who were under scrutiny as part of an investigation launched by the state's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Jackson passed away in June 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest. His personal doctor Conrad Murray — who was not one of the seven doctors included in the investigation — has been charged in his death and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter after allegedly giving the star the potent anesthetic propofol.

"I am very disappointed," said Brian Oxman, an attorney for Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson. "The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality." Oxman is serving as Joe Jackson's lawyer in a wrongful death suit against Murray.

Bureau spokesperson Christine Gasparac told the AP that one of the doctors who was under investigation was referred to the California Medical Board for prescribing drugs to one of Jackson's aliases, however, a spokesperson for the board did not confirm the referral. A spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Agency told the AP that it has also dropped its investigation into Jackson's doctors.

Murray lawyer Ed Chernoff has maintained that the doctor did not administer a fatal dose of propofol and has suggested that either Jackson gave himself the anesthetic or another person may have supplied the late star with the dose. However, an anesthesia expert has said the possibility of Jackson administering the drug himself is unlikely.

A preliminary hearing in the Jackson manslaughter case is slated for August and Murray faces a sentence of up to four years in jail.

'Breaking Dawn' Casts Mackenzie Foy As Renesmee

'Twilight' author Stephenie Meyer confirms the 9-year-old's casting via Facebook.
By Gil Kaufman

Mackenzie Foy
Photo: Mackenziefoy.com

After practically years of suspense over who would play vampire-human child Renesmee in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn," it was author Stephenie Meyer who finally got to break the news on Wednesday night.

"Very excited about our new Renesmee, Mackenzie Foy," she wrote on the "Twilight" Facebook page. "She's an amazing young actress and I'm excited to work with her. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer!"

Rumors that newcomer Foy would be cast in the role had been circulating for the past week. The 9-year-old actress has a limited résumé, with just a few TV appearances to her credit so far on the shows " 'Til Death" and "FlashForward." She has also appeared on the cover of the Garnet Hill clothing catalog and in Gap ads and Burger King commercials. She will take on the role of Edward and Bella's daughter, one of the meatier parts in the second half of the "Breaking Dawn" saga.

Fans will, of course, have a while to wait before they get their first glimpse of Foy, since the first chapter of "Breaking Dawn" hits screens on November 18, 2011, and the second half will roll out on November 16, 2012. It's not known exactly where the book will be split into two, but since Renesmee is born about halfway through the story, she's not likely to appear in the first movie.

When Foy was first mentioned for the role, Entertainment Weekly immediately wondered how the angelic-faced newbie will be able to portray her rapidly aging character. According to unnamed sources, "Dawn" director Bill Condon "will employ similar digital effects to those used by David Fincher in 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' where Foy's face would be digitally transferred onto the face of a younger child. It's also probable that the studio will hire a younger child in some capacity too."

The response from Twihards on Facebook was overwhelmingly positive. "Thanks for dropping in Stephenie," Ronnie M. wrote. "So excited that MacKenzie was cast; she seems like she'll do a great job. You all thought it would be hard to cast the 'Perfect' Edward and I'm sure you thought the same for Renesmee, but once again you guys have outdone yourselves. Can't wait for 'Breaking Dawn'!"

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Soon To Pass 1 Billion YouTube Views

Gaga is on pace to hit the landmark on October 20, the Biebs on November 1.
By Gil Kaufman

People love to watch videos by Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Like, a lot of people . . . a lot of times.

According to Billboard magazine, both artists are poised to cross a seemingly impossible barrier in the next month: one billion all-time YouTube views.

Gaga — who averaged almost 1.8 million views per day in September — is predicted to reach the milestone first at her current pace, around October 20. Bieber — with around 3.7 million views per day in September — will be close on her heels, with a predicted November 1 arrival at the mark.

David Birch, communications director for TubeMogul, an online video analytics and viewer data research firm, said the two will reach the landmark by easily outperforming the next closest artist, late pop icon Michael Jackson, who has around 600 million views on YouTube.

Though Gaga will likely hit the billion plateau first, Bieber has actually been lapping her in the YouTube views department for most of this year. From July 1 to September 28, TubeMogul reported that the teen pop star averaged 3.98 million daily views to Lady G's 2.04 million. He's been on that torrid pace since February 28, averaging 3.83 million daily views while Gaga has averaged 2.53 million. In comparison, Billboard noted that in that same period, Kanye West averaged 271,000 daily views.

It helps that both artists have a number of YouTube's all-time most-viewed music clips, with Gaga's "Bad Romance" ranking No. 2 with 288 million views, "Just Dance" a bit further back at No. 11 with 123 million views, "Alejandro" at No. 26 with 87 million and "Telephone" at No. 31 with 85 million. As for Bieber, his smash "Baby" is the most-watched video ever on YouTube with 345 million views, while his "Never Let You Go" lands at No. 22 with 92 million views and "Never Say Never" is at No. 28 with 86 million.

Gaga actually passed the one billion mark in total online views (both on and outside of YouTube) in March, thanks to landing three clips in the 100 million-plus club.

Alicia Keys has proven to be as selfless in real life as she is in song.

The singer held her 8th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Thursday night. The fundraiser brought out Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, Jay Sean, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and more.

Jay-Z and Keys' husband, Swizz Beatz, performed "On to the Next One," and Jay later performed "Empire State of Mind." Monae also hit the stage, as did Keys and Sade, who performed a duet, "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."

"It's my heart and soul," Keys told MTV News about the organization she co-founded. "Since the beginning, we've been very driven to do incredible work. I'm proud to show what four to five women who are very dedicated can do."

The organization benefits children and families who have been affected by AIDS but can't afford to purchase medicine; the event reportedly helped raise $2.4 million.

This year, Keep a Child Alive introduced the "Buy Life" T-shirt. The shirt features a large barcode on the garment; donors can buy the shirt and scan the code with their smart phones to make a donation to the charity. Every time the code is scanned by a phone, a donation goes through. Ryan Seacrest, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are among the celebrity spokespeople appearing in ads for the shirt.

"It's like a dream to me to be among these people singing and performing, and opening people's eyes to what Keep a Child Alive can do," Keys said.

Meryl Streep's Kid, Steven Tyler, Shake it Up, Supah Ninjas

Meryl Streep's Kid, Steven Tyler, Shake it Up, Supah Ninjas

With each weekly serving of Kid Scoop, we'll share the latest news in the world of kids' TV and movies, so you can be the know-it-all for a change. This week's scoop features Meryl Streep's kid, Steven Tyler, slick dancers and 'Supah' ninjas . What could be more fun?

Gigantic News
TeenNick breaks new ground in live action drama… kind of. Gigantic, which premieres October 8 at 10 pm, focuses on the fictional lives of Hollywood teens with famous parents. The stunt-casting twist: The show stars teens who really do have famous parents. Grace Gummer is Meryl Streep's real-life daughter, while Gia Mantegna is Joe Mantegna's daughter. (Watch a Gigantic preview). For those of you playing Kid TV Bingo at home, check off the following: famous kids playing non-famous kids (Kenan & Kel, Zooey 101), non-famous kids playing famous kids (Big Time Rush, Victorious, Naked Brothers Band), famous kids playing famous kids (JONAS), and now kids of famous people playing kids of famous people. Got all that? Second cousins of non-famous people, call your agents now!

Shake a Leg
Not to be outdone, The Disney Channel is stepping out with its own new sitcom, Shake It Up, premiering November 7. Disney calls it "television’s first dance-driven sitcom about friendship and following one's dreams.” (as opposed to all those dance-driven sitcoms about making enemies and selling out). It's about two teenagers, played by newcomers Bella Thorne and Zendaya, who land roles as dancers on a popular teen dance show in Chicago. Will 'dancing' become the new 'singing' in kids TV the way it has in reality television? And is the one-name name a new trend for kid actors? Three things you can count on -- no ballroom dancing, no one saying "cutting the rug", and no Michael Bolton cameos.

Tyler Wanders Aboard Wonder
Before Steven Tyler takes his seat on American Idol, he'll be hanging out with Nickelodeon's Wonder Pets in the October 15 musical special Adventures in Wonderland!. Tyler, Idina Menzel and Ziggy Marley voice The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, and the Cheshire Cat, respectively, in an homage to the classic tale. In this version, the pets have to round up all three for a special tea party. Don't expect Sarah Palin to show -- it's not that kind of tea party.

New Ninjas on the Block
Ninjas never go out of style. As proof, Nickelodeon has green-lit a new live-action comedy series called Supah Ninjas (Ninjas 1, Spelling 0). Premiering next year, the show is about three high schools students (a shy kid, his bud, and his crush) who enter the secret world of ninjas. Ironically, The Power Rangers, now in their new home on Nickelodeon, will also be saying hi-yaaa! to viewers in 2011. With 17 seasons under their shiny belts, the Rangers can probably teach the Ninjas a thing or two about staying power, but bet on the Ninjas to wear far less dorky costumes.

Will kids even care that Grace Gummer is Meryl Streep's daughter? Chime in now!
