Looks like Harry Potter wasn't able to work his magic on the Tony nominating committee. On Tuesday morning, when selections for best lead actor in a musical were announced, Daniel Radcliffe's name didn't come up. Poor Daniel. He was also snubbed back in 2009, when he made his Broadway debut in the play, Equus. At least this time his musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, was nominated for best revival of a musical. So that's some consolation.
Who did get Tony love? Radcliffe was overlooked for Norbert Leo Butz (for Catch Me If You Can), Joshua Henry (for Scottsboro Boys), Tony Sheldon (for Priscilla Queen of the Desert) and two actors, Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, both from The Book of Mormon.
That show, actually, looks like the one to beat this year. The irreverent musical comedy created by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone earned the most nominations of the day -- 14 in all (just one nomination shy of the record 15 nabbed by Mel Brooks' The Producers in 2001). And The Scottsboro Boys was a close second with 12 nods.
Meanwhile, other notable nominees were John Larroquette for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Al Pacino for The Merchant of Venice, Edie Falco for The House of Blue Leaves, and Vanessa Redgrave for Driving Miss Daisy. Getting the shaft was the entire all-star cast of the Broadway revival of That Championship Season, which boasts such big names as Brian Cox, Jim Gaffigan, Chris Noth, Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland.
